Subject: Clemens Center Bridge Fire UPDATE
From: Chief Andrew Mallow
At approximately 2:50 PM on July 11, 2024 the Elmira Fire Department responded to a large fire under the north end of the Clemens Center bridge. As a result of this fire the bridge sustained structural damage that is currently being repaired by the State of New York. This fire has drawn a lot of attention from the press as well as the public due to both the inconvenience of the Clemens Center bridge being temporarily closed, as well as the location of the fire and items consumed by it possibly being that of a “homeless encampment”. The fire investigation has been ongoing by the Elmira Fire Department and the Elmira Police Department, and currently the cause of the fire is considered undetermined. We will provide an update if there are any new developments, and until such time, no further information will be released. Andrew Mallow Fire Chief
