From: Chief Andrew Mallow
At approximately 2:50 PM on July 11, 2024 the Elmira Fire Department responded to
reports of a large amount of smoke under the north end of the Clemens Center bridge. Upon arrival
firefighters found a large fire that was being fed by winds from the south and west. Firefighters
were able to bring the fire under control in approximately five minutes. The firefighters and
investigators were able to determine that the bulk of the fire consisted of at least three couches, as
well as a large volume of garbage, wood, and plastic items. These items when consumed would
be consistent with the thick black smoke that could be observed during the fire. We have received
some questions from the public about the smoke that was possibly inhaled downwind of the
incident. This type of smoke is toxic and hazardous to breathe and can cause irritation to the lungs.
No one was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and this type of smoke, while dangerous in
high concentrations, can quickly dissipate as it travels away from the fire scene reducing the
chances of harmful effects from inhalation. Anyone who is experiencing lung irritation or
difficulty breathing should seek medical help immediately. During the fire it was observed that
visible signs of structural damage may have occurred to the supports under the bridge. As a
precaution the northbound lane of the bridge has been temporarily closed and representatives from
the Department of Transportation were contacted and are currently assessing the structural
components of the bridge for the safety of the public.
