Subject: Homicide Investigation

On June 21st, 2024, a superior court warrant was issued for Dante M Baldwin, a 28-year-old male from Springfield, Massachusetts for Murder in the Second Degree, a class A Felony and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Second Degree, both Class C Felonies related to the homicide of Norman Cherry. On October 8th, 2024 the Elmira Police Department was advised that Baldwin had been located in the Springfield area and was taken into custody. Baldwin was returned to New York and remanded to the Chemung County Jail pending arraignment in Chemung County Court.

The Elmira Police Department would like to thank the Springfield, Massachusetts Police Department and the United States Marshall’s Service for their assistance with this investigation.

As an update to this original press release the Elmira Police Department is identifying the deceased victim as Norman D. Cherry dob 10/19/1980.

No further information is being released at this time and the Elmira Police Department is still actively investigating this incident. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Elmira Police Department Detective Bureau.

On May 20th, 2024 at approximately 10:52 pm the Elmira Police Department responded to the report of a confirmed shooting with a victim outside of Gush’s Thirsty Bear at 351 E Washington Ave.

Upon arrival no victim was located at the scene. It was later determined that the victim was transported to a local hospital by a personal vehicle prior to police arrival.

Officers did conduct an investigation at the scene . Elmira Police Officers were assisted in this investigation by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the West Elmira Police Department, Elmira Fire Department and Erway Ambulance.

The male victim was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. No further information is being released about the victim at this time.
