Impact of Crime
Reactions to a crime vary based on the individual. Some individuals report feeling "okay" after experiencing a crime. However, 50% of people who have been victimized report moderate distress as a result of the crime (Department of Justice, 2012). While reactions vary, it is not uncommon for people to experience the following after a crime:
- Anger
- Anxiety
- Avoiding people or certain situations
- Fear
- Feeling numb
- Flashbacks
- Guilt
- Isolation
- Poor concentration
- Sleep problems
- Stomach problems
- Weight loss/gain
While these initial reactions are normal, we strongly encourage anyone who has been a victim of a crime to contact an advocate.
The Elmira Police Department's Victims Assistance Program is committed to providing excellent services to victims of crime. If you recently had contact with our program, we would like to know about your experience. Please take a few minutes to rate the following statements by selecting the choices that most closely match your feelings. Your responses will help us serve you and other crime victims more effectively in the future.
